I am a two-time winning vegan bikini athlete, certified personal trainer, the first-ever vegan WNBF bikini pro and author of “Jacked on the Beanstalk: Plant-Based Fuel for Vegan Athletes.”
My proudest moment was winning the WNBF (World Natural Bodybuilding Federation) pro card on July 26, 2014 in Austin, Texas. It was a combination of being able to win the bikini overall title as a vegan but to also do it in front of my entire Plantbuilt.com team. When hard work is rewarded and goals conquered, I really don’t think there’s a better feeling.
Hunger often gets confused with thirst therefore it’s important to stay hydrated so you can know the difference between “actual” hunger and thirst. Aim to drink at least 2–3 liters per day. My second tip is to make herbal tea your new BFF! If you feel the urge to snack at night, try satisfying the need with “sweet” herbal tea! My personal faves are vanilla hazelnut or dark chocolate chai with a bit of unsweetened vanilla almond milk. I make a big-ass mug, sip it slowly then try my best to pretend that it’s cake.
Commit to exercising 30 minutes a day, four days a week. Pick days and times that work for you and stick with it, no matter what. Mark those workouts in your calendar. Make sure everyone in your life knows that those times are for your workouts. Even if you only have the energy or desire to walk during those 30 minutes or do a half hour yoga video at home, just promise yourself that you are committed to exercising for those 30 minutes, four times a week. Then every month, increase the intensity (not necessarily the time) of those workouts. Jog for 30 minutes, do a 30-minute cardio kickboxing video at home, etc.
My respect and love for animals and all the creatures we share this world with. I will always do my part to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves.
